Fort Meikel died an untimely death with the coming of Interstate 95 and the torturous exchanges that resulted in strip-mining the location of the fort. We can still see the fort in a few correctly identified photographs. Dr. Shiman led the way on this effort a few years back and we are just getting around to get these images posted and identified. More to come.
Not much to say about him yet, but he contributes interesting views of Peebles Farm and Armstrong's Mill. And he is the only artist to have captured the location of the Pegram House outside the Union lines at Fort Welch.
Are those hooves or merely spindly canine paws? Did the dog look suddenly to its left or does it really have a narrow goat-like face? Is the tail too long for a goat and trending in the wrong direction? Inquiring minds want to know.
Dave has added a new entry on the 50th New York Engineers- thus far it concentrates on their spectacular camp, but eventually will have information on the work they performed at Petersburg. New graphics have been added to Andrew McCallum, Andrew W. Warren, Steeples, and U.S. Military Railroad. A new anecdote has been added to Kittens, Puppies and Ponies about a horse that tries to desert to Yankee lines.
We are getting the interactive portion of this website started up, and we are sure to hear from you since the Siege of Petersburg is the most interesting and understudied campaign of the American Civil War. The reason? It is that damn engineering, so technical sounding, so intimidating .... might even need some mathematics, who knows?
We like to point out that the Petersburg Project is a work in progress but we think we have added a few interesting things lately. Dr. Phil's Battery X is a nice piece of photographic sleuthing, and creatively presented. Mme Julie has added material on the massive Confederate military dam on the Rohoic Creek SW of P'burg, which caused a great flood and by the way it's remnants are still very visible. Some people are saying that the last puppy I posted looks more like a goat. I must remind them -- "Tail Up, Goat." Yes, this is a serious site. But we refuse to relinquish our sense of humor to bowtie, elbow-patched anemia. I have been digging more deeply into the Timothy O'Sullivan photographs--many of his photos have not been attributed to this great photographer. We will eventually set the record straight. And if you have clues on the identity of "Vest Man" please let us know. He may well be the subject of my/our next post. Basically, we hope you enjoy the site. We expect criticisms and corrections. But please be civil. It was, after all, a Civil War. |
