Three Maps from General Weitzel dated June 29th, 1864
General Godfrey Weitzel (USMA 1855) was Chief Engineer for Butler's Army of the James, Department of Virginia and North Carolina. Weitzel with his assistant Lt. Peter Michie were responsible for selecting the site and preparing the approaches of the Great Pontoon Bridge Crossing of James River, June 14-16, 1864. The first map shows direct approaches from City Point to Petersburg and likely reflects the information available to the army during the first advances in June. Second map reflects the wider area occupied by the Army of the James since mid-May, encompassing Bermuda Hundred and areas north of Swift Creek. Third map is more of a survey sketch of the Bermuda Hundred area. Links provided for all. Zoom provided for map 2.
