Sketches Showing the Positions of the Redoubts and Batteries of the Lines of the U.S. Forces in Front of Petersburg
Three versions of Federal lines from the National Archives. "Headquarters Army of the Potomac Engineer Department," dated Sept. 13, Sept. 28, and Oct. 25, 1864. Scale is 2 inches = 1 mile. Maps are marked "Official" and signed "N. Michler, Major of Engineers." Map coverage expands as the Federal lines extend westerly. First two maps reach the Weldon Railroad, third reaches Forts Fisher, Gregg, Sampson, Cummings, area of Peebles and Pegram's Farm. These maps are so-called "sun prints" or "black maps." The original map is drawn in heavy black ink, placed over a chemically treated paper, and exposed to sunlight, resulting in a negative image of the original. In this way numerous copies could be made from a single map.
